International Health Insurance FAQs

Find answers to common questions about GeoBlue for Students, Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ's international health insurance coverage.

General Information

What is the new insurance program for Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ student travelers?

Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ has transitioned to a GeoBlue blanket program effective January 1, 2025, for all student travelers. This means that students no longer enroll directly with GeoBlue for coverage, and that there is one group plan number for all Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ student travelers. A student may travel abroad for different university purposes while at Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ but have the same plan number.

Why does Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ require that I maintain my domestic plan while abroad?

Although GeoBlue applies only while abroad (and not in the United States), Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ University’s Student Insurance Office requires all full-time students to maintain domestic health insurance coverage during study abroad enrollment. This is to avoid any gaps in coverage in case a medical emergency abroad requires the student to return home early for continued treatment or recovery.

When might travelers want to purchase the commercial policy for international travel?

Students and employees should consider enrolling in a separate commercial health insurance for independent leisure travel or personal travel before or after the program.

Registration and Claims

How do I register for the new GeoBlue blanket program?

Registering is optional but allows you to access important health information in your destination. Download the free GeoBlue mobile app or go to geobluestudents.com and register using your Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ email address and group access code: GTB9999NWBKT.

How do I submit claims for medical services paid out of pocket?

Claims forms for medical services paid out of pocket should be emailed to claims@geo-blue.com, as the eClaim functionality is not available for blanket users. Find a claim form and instructions at Reimbursement for Care.

I traveled abroad with Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ before 2025. When I log into the GeoBlue mobile app, I receive an error message. How can I resolve this?

Students who were previously enrolled under the daily pay plan may get an error message when they try to log into the GeoBlue mobile app. To resolve this, there are two options:

  1. Remove Existing Email Registration: GeoBlue can remove your existing email registration (NU email) so you can use the same email address to register under the blanket plan using the group access code: GTB9999NWBKT. Once your email registration is removed from your previous account, you will not have access to submit eClaims through your prior GeoBlue certificate number: 50xxxxxxx. Any claims incurred prior to January 1, 2025, that were paid out of pocket can be submitted via email at claims@geo-blue.com indicating your prior plan information.
  2. Keep Existing Registration Intact: GeoBlue can keep your existing registration intact so you can continue to access this account and submit any outstanding claims for reimbursement that occurred prior to January 1, 2025. To register under the group access code, use a personal email address to complete the registration process. This will allow you to access the appropriate information during your current time abroad under the blanket plan and benefits.

Eligibility and Coverage

I am an international student returning to my country of citizenship and permanent residence, am I eligible for the Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ GeoBlue Student Plan?

In general, students are not eligible in their country of citizenship, though some exceptions apply for students traveling on short-term (two weeks or less) Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ-sponsored travel. Students on short-term Pritzker or Kellogg Exchange Programs may be eligible for coverage. Check with your school contact for confirmation.

If my undergraduate study abroad program provider includes a health insurance product, am I also covered under Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ’s GeoBlue for Students plan?

Many of the third-party program providers with whom we work (see “exempt programs”) provide participants with a high-quality insurance plan and 24/7 support services. As a result, those students are not eligible for the Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ GeoBlue Student Plan. Refer to Study Abroad Health Insurance for a list of exempt programs.

Can my spouse/partner qualify as an eligible dependent for purposes of enrollment?

Yes, possibly. Review the definition of "Eligible Dependent" in Section 10 of the GeoBlue Certificate of Coverage for confirmation.

Visa Letters

How can I show proof of enrollment in an international medical insurance plan obtain my visa?

Students and employees who need proof of insurance for visa purposes should contact your departmental trip organizer or the Office of Global Safety and Security (OGSS) for assistance. To assist with a visa letter, OGSS will need a traveler's full name as it appears on their passport, date of birth, destination country(s), and travel dates. Please allow 3 business days for personalized visa letter preparation.
