Enhancements to the residential experience will focus on community spaces

Renovations to Modernize Bobb-McCulloch and 1835 Hinman Residence Halls

Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ has announced plans to renovate  Bobb-McCulloch Hall and 1835 Hinman, creating enhanced residential experiences in the core of both north and south campus.

“The renovation project is an exciting endeavor, especially as it ties to stewardship, student belonging and well-being,” Residential Services Director of Operations and Services Jenny Douglas said. “We’re reimagining what these residence halls could be while emphasizing more accessible design, opportunities for engagement and enhancements to overall infrastructure.

Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ undergraduate students have a two-year on-campus residency requirement when they arrive in Evanston. Douglas said these renovations will help ensure that students have a consistent experience across the school’s on-campus housing options.

Bobb-McCulloch are two separate but connected residence halls that house more than 400 undergraduate students between them. Their proximity to north campus amenities including dining halls, Henry Crown Sports Pavilion and academic buildings like Tech make them a popular on-campus option.

Before closing in 2018, 1835 Hinman housed over 200 students across the street from many Medill & Weinberg academic buildings, just steps away from the South Boulevard Beach in Evanston.

A grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education and a decision from University president Michael Schill made these residential enhancements possible as part of Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ’s housing master plan that has was introduced in 2018.

“The residential experience is grounded in community and belonging,” Senior Director of Residential Experience Deb Schmidt-Rogers said. “The renovations of both Hinman and Bobb-McCulloch are poised to create new opportunities for students to engage–both academically and socially.”

In Hinman, this will include expanded kitchenettes where students can gather for a meal or snack as well as new communal lounges. In Bobb-McCulloch, laundry rooms and kitchenettes will be added to every floor.

“We cannot wait for students to enjoy these new spaces and watch the community grow,” Schmidt-Rogers said.

Construction at 1835 Hinman is underway and renovations at Bobb-McCulloch will begin in June 2025.  Updates will be available on the Residential Services website.
